When you are pregnant you need to eat between 100 and 400 more calories per day than when you are not pregnant.  When you are lactating you need an additional 500 calories per day.  Of course these additional and all of your calories for that matter should be nutrient rich.  Fruits, vegetables, legumes, grains, proteins, folic acid, calcium, and iron are all part of the essentials you and your baby need.
